What It Means to Welcome: Stories We Share

When was a time you felt embraced and welcomed in your community? What are some challenges around welcoming today? How have communities navigated these challenges to welcome newcomers or people seeking safety? What stories build bridges between newcomers and community members?

In celebration of Welcoming Week on September 17, 2025, members of the Refugee Storytellers Collective shared their reflections and experiences, exploring how traditions and stories can build connection and understanding. Together, we considered how to support each other as people, friends, and neighbors — even as challenges and barriers are on the rise.
